In this example, the invoice’s important information will get extracted and placed in an XML file along with a PDF file. This window print driver is using Microsoft new v4 XPS technology.

General Business Printing​

By using the advanced capture features this new driver can extract document information that contains both electronic and images in the same process. The Desktop Automation Driver has both engines vector and OCR that will be used to intelligently identify and extract important document information. In this example, a user will fill in an HCFA healthcare form and have it delivered to a folder structure. The extracted information will be placed in an XML file next to the PDF image.

Document Delivery

Print directly to SharePoint and the first time quickly define the SharePoint location and index values. This print driver will intelligently identify and extract important document information. In this example, a user will print an invoice form and have it delivered directly to SharePoint. The extracted information will be placed in the index values in SharePoint as a PDF image.

Microsoft's new v4 driver technology uses the Microsoft XPS format, replacing the 25-year-old Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format. The XPS format is similar to a self-contained PDF file. Everything about the document such as fonts, images, and layout are all included in this one file. Each XPS document consists of a very organized structure that defines every aspect of the document. This new Microsoft XPS format is a huge improvement over the older EMF formats when it comes to portability and usability.

Starting with Windows 8, printing is processed via this new XPS technology. For backward compatibility with older printer drivers, Microsoft has added built-in converters to the operating system that convert XPS documents to EMF. Unfortunately, this additional step can cause conversion issues and printing delays depending on the layout, size, and color of the document. Drivers that work natively with the XPS format have fewer points of failure and improve future compatibility with printing applications.
